Assistant Principal's Message
Dear Parents, Carers and the St Joseph’s Community,
Clever Questioning
How many times have you asked your child how their day was, only to get the answer “good” or maybe they’ve replied “nothing” when asked what they did at school? As a parent, I too have had many a frustrating, one-sided conversation about the ins and outs of my son’s education. As a teacher, I have often wished that my students would go home and share some of the fantastic things they accomplish in class. Recently I came across an article that listed some questioning ideas to help elicit more information about your child’s day. Why don’t you give some of them a go …
- Tell me about a moment today when you felt excited about what you were learning.
- Think about what you learned and did in class today. What’s something you would like to know more about? What’s a question you have that came from your learning today?
- Were there times today when you felt that one of your classmates demonstrated care for you?
- Were there any moments today when you felt proud of yourself?
- Tell me about a conversation you had with a classmate or friend that you enjoyed.
- What was challenging about your day?
- What do you appreciate about your day?
- What did you learn about yourself today?
- Is there anything that you’d like to talk about that I might be able to help you figure out?
- Is there anything you are worried about?
- What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
- Is there a question you wish I’d ask about your day?
Kids Committee
Within a school community, the voice of the student is an important and powerful voice that needs to be heard. Yesterday I met with a representative from each class to discuss school rules at St Joseph’s. The group decided to give our working group the name of ‘Kids Committee’. We spoke about why we need rules and how we can make them accessible to everyone. I will be meeting with the students throughout the term to continue our discussions.
School Musical
The school is certainly a hive of activity with dancing, acting, painting and costume making in the lead up to our School Musical in Week 10. Tickets are now available on Qkr! A reminder that we will be holding another working bee this Friday afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30pm. If you have half an hour to spare, please come to the Hub and lend a hand.
Father’s Day Celebrations
We are looking forward to our Father’s Day celebrations this Friday. Our breakfast will start at 8am and will be followed by a Prayer Celebration, led by 6 Black at 9:15am. Pre-paid tickets for the breakfast will be available for collection in the hall on Friday morning.
I would like to wish all the men in our St Joseph’s community a very special day on Sunday and we keep in our thoughts and prayers those who are no longer with us.
I hope you have a pleasant end to the week and enjoy the countdown to Spring!
