Future Horticulturalists Take a Lesson on Climate

After investigating climate change and the effects on the planet, Year 4 explored the National Arboretum to see how trees and plants from around the world could acclimate to the Canberra weather conditions. Along with various examples, Year 4 was also impressed by the earth’s ability to heal itself, despite humans’ expert advice. “They brought in some trees that were being attacked by aphids," said Esmee V. “The tree released a scent that called ladybugs in to save it by eating all of the aphids,” she said.

Following our visit, Year 4 became expert horticulturalists and were asked to perform the tasks of applying new knowledge to bringing in the African Sausage Tree successfully to Canberra. Amani S was able to come up with some strategies learned from the Arboretum’s effort to preserve trees brought in from the Canary Islands. “Because we don’t have the native African animals to break down the seeds, I would use sandpaper. Then I would plant them within walls to prevent frost from killing them,” she said.
